Clothes too long, too big, too this, too that? Then do it yourself! Learn to hem pants and do simple alterations; no sewing experience necessary. First, you’ll get comfortable with the sewing machine, how to thread it, and practice sewing control. Then you’ll start ripping apart hems and seams to alter clothing for better fit. We’ll provide the sewing machine and other necessary tools and supplies; you bring items for alteration (or old clothes for practicing on). First Fridays: Knitting: From Head to Toe - Part I & II Friday, Mar.5th & 12th 7-10pm Tr. Sara McLaughlin Part I: Hats-Get in the loop, let go of preconceived ideas about knitting and create stylish hats to warm you up this winter! We’ll walk you through all the basics; learn how to cast on, knit ribbing, measure for gauge, and use simple color patterns to complete your hat. Part II: Socks-Whether you have a little knitting experience or more, this fun workshop will guide you through all the knitting basics for creating wearable, warm, and way cute booties for your favorite infant or toddler! Concepts cross-over exactly into larger sock knitting. Learn basic knitting techniques including casting on, knitting, purling, knitting in the round, increasing, decreasing, and casting off. At the end of the class you’ll seam up the back, creating a finished sock! Materials are provided for both workshops including needles and yarn. Sarah Horne Create one-of-a kind handmade silver jewelry; Precious Metal Clay is an amazing material that models similar to clay and, once fired, is 99.9% fine silver. We’ll review the technical aspects of working with the medium and provide all necessary tools and equipment. You’ll sculpt several pieces like pendants, earrings, beads, or rings. After the workshop, we’ll fire and polish your jewelry and have it ready for you to pick up, it’s that easy! After some practice, we’ll introduce fusing and slumping kiln-fired basics and show you how easy and fun the process can be. In this fun workshop we’ll expand the definition of valentines by creating little tokens of love in the third dimension! Have fun creating in clay while learning a range of hand-building techniques! Last Sundays: Jewelry: Earring Basics Sunday, Feb. 28th 4:00-7:00pm Tr. Sarah Horne Delight, dangle, and dazzle! Learn to design and create earrings that express your own personal style! In this workshop, you will learn the art of linking beads together with wire, beginning with simple assembly techniques including headpin pieces and then progressing into more complex approaches like chain, herringbone, and findings fabrication. Practice wire will be used to gain expertise in wrapping the looping. We’ll provide basic materials. If you wish to work with semi-precious beads and silver wire, you’ll want to bring your own; this workshop is great for beginner through intermediate makers! Last Sundays: Felting & Fibers Sunday, March 28th 4-7pm Tr. Carole Loeffler Felting is an ancient art form that actually pre-dates weaving. It is amazingly simple; wool (or roving) fibers are basically matted together to bind into a fabric with either a wet (soap and water) or dry (barbed needle) process. In this exciting workshop you’ll learn both techniques, work with a luscious palette of roving colors, and even learn how to recycle old wool sweaters into new felted creations! Get into the process and create wearable’s like felted beads for jewelry, scarves, and little 3-D needle felted objects. Felt is fuzzy and fun and easy to do at home, too! Pop-Ups & Paper Sculpture Saturday, April 17th 1-3pm Tr. Colette Fu Pop-up books; remember those? They are not only for kids; they are amazing feats of paper engineering! In this exciting workshop, let your creative process free and explore basic techniques for folding, angles and mechanisms while constructing your own pop-up structures. Simple folds magically can build into seemingly complex structures.
